In 2018, Singapore encountered 3885 fire outbreaks, with an increase in fires in non-residential and non-building premises. Efficient, effective and early detection of fires via electrical fire alarm systems can save thousands of lives and properties. The revised SS 645:2019, formerly known as CP10, provides requirements on the installation and servicing of electrical fire alarm systems in buildings. It covers fire alarm systems using manual call points, heat detectors, smoke detectors, flame detectors and video image fire detectors. Given the destructive nature of fires, it is crucial for professional engineers, contractors and architects to understand the principles of electrical fire alarm systems in the design of buildings.
