Russia Singapore Business Forum
The RSBF is the premier platform for fostering investment, trade and thought leadership between Russia and Singapore. RSBF 2018 is the first edition organised by Enterprise Singapore.

About RSBF 2018
As global economies continue to face uncertainty, risk and obstacles, Russia and Singapore must mitigate the impact of global volatility and seek out new ways of growth. RSBF 2018 will address these pertinent issues and examine Russian entrepreneurship, factors for successful cross-border collaborations, and new shifts in the consumer retail landscape, and Russia as a potential market for SMEs. The panels will cover a comprehensive range of themes from Russia’s economic fundamentals and potential, to opportunities in consumer goods and technology.

The Forum will also provide opportunities for business partnerships to be forged, through 1-to-1 business matching between Russian and Singaporean companies.

RSBF 2018 coincides with the 50th year of diplomatic relations between Russia and Singapore.

9.50amKeynote: Russia - Getting back to Business

The Russian economy is recovering from recent economic setbacks, sanctions and depressed commodity prices. Government expenditure, lower interest rates and growing consumer confidence are driving growth. Its increasingly market-based economy has been generating opportunities for foreign investors as well as for its tech-savvy, innovation-rich domestic enterprises.

  • As Russia’s economy strengthens, how will the business environment change?
  • What barriers are currently impeding the flow of investments, trade, and business between Russia and Singapore/Asia, and how can these be overcome?
  • The Russian government is strongly incentivising local production, assembly and value-addition. How practical or realistic is it for Singapore SMEs to switch from an export model to local production?
  • How is technology impacting Russians' competitiveness?
  • What is the role of the Russian private sector in driving change across the market and beyond?
  • What are the long-term implications of the West’s sanctions on Russian companies’ growth strategies?
  • How should international investors factor in the uncertainty of the sanctions environment in their business planning for Russia?
  • Which sectors feature the most promising projects which could call for closer collaboration between the two countries?
  • What is the experience of Russian companies internationalising to Asia?
10.40amNetworking Break
11.10amConsumer: Winning over the Russian Consumer

Consumption in Russia is undergoing a rapid transformation.  Domestically produced goods are gaining market share and consumers are increasingly savvy and sensitive to both price and quality. E-commerce is also changing their behaviour and creating new business opportunities.

  • How can local companies partner Russian companies to compete efficiently?
  • To what degree is e-commerce disrupting traditional retail and distribution?
  • How should foreign brands approach the market? Is localisation the only game in town?
  • How different is the Russian consumer from other emerging market consumers?
  • What significant trends in convenience, customisation and personalisation will impact the sector?
  • Will larger brands be nimble enough to compete in a social media-driven retail scene?
  • How do brands navigate logistics challenges in supplying to a physically large market like Russia?
  • What are the top three things that foreign brands should understand about the Russian consumer?
  • How significant are the differences in consumption patterns between the major regions e.g. Moscow vs St Petersburg vs Russian Far East?
11.50amTechnology: Bridging the Ecosystem between Russia & Singapore

Blockchain, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality could be part of our normal day to day lives in the very near future. A healthy ecosystem is required to support and guide the development and commercialisation of these technologies. Russia and Singapore tech ecosystems have different strengths; how can we leverage each other’s strengths to benefit start-ups in both regions.
  • Why should local companies consider sourcing technology from Russia? How can they navigate and identify technology partners?
  • Could Singapore be the natural base for Russian technology firms and start-ups to venture into Asia? What are the benefits for Russian companies in having Singapore as a base?
  • What are the differences between the tech ecosystem in Russia and Singapore? What can they learn from each other?
  • How can Singapore-Russia partnerships leverage each other’s strengths to gain access to a greater pool of customers?
  • What opportunities are there for local companies to expand into Russia, and vice versa?
12.50pmSpotlight Asia: Defining the Opportunities for Russian Entrepreneurs in Asia

Asia has been growing at a rate of 5.2% over the last decade and will be the fastest growing region in the next decade.  More than 500 Russian companies are based in Singapore, using it as a base for their Asian operations and increasingly we see that more Russian companies are venturing into Asia.

  • How can Russian companies, which are new to the region, understand the highly differentiated and fragmented markets in Asia?
  • Why is Asia extremely important for Russian entrepreneurs/companies?
  • How will Russia companies benefit from having an Asian strategy?
  • What is Singapore’s role in their Asian strategy?
